Name the two ways in which you can present a portfolio of work to a potential employer
Printed - in a portfolio book
Online- on a web host
Task.1 Research
Search into three portfolio websites within your chosen specialism and answer the follwing questions for each website.
Website name - http://www.davidburnett.com/
What are your first impressions ? What attracted you to this particular website? The websites first impressions are the word proffesional and clear cut. I think that images that this guy takes a detailed and are of the world this is stated in its summary this is simalair to the photography that I want to do.
What is the main colour scheme?
The website runs with a theme of clear black and grey. This looks basic and easy to compute.
How many navigation tabs/buttons are there ? Their are 8 connections to sperate pages within the page and one to directly email the photographer.
How many subfolders or drop down menus are there ?
There is only one clear drop down menu shown in the gallery section as the different sets are sectioned of together.
What is your overall impression ? I think that the page is clear cut and proffesional and seems like he knows what hes doing with his work displayed accuratly on the front page.
Summarise the webpage to appeal to potential employers.
A clear cut and proffesional summarisation of a career with correctly displayed work.
Website name - http://www.jackkurtzphotography.com/#!/index/G0000iVlXpUTsVAo
What are your first impressions ? What attracted you to this particular website? I think the website appears proffesional but is not made with someone in the know about technology as there are a few rough edges. I think i again was attracted due to the nature of the photography the photographer take as it is based around the world and is easily accessible throughout the website to see.
What is the main colour scheme? Similair to the first website the page has used dark and simple colours including grey and black to exadurate the colour of the photos.
How many navigation tabs/buttons are there ? There is one simple button on the page that leads to the navigation for the website this then has different categories.
How many subfolders or drop down menus are there ? There are quite a few with over 15 slections of pgae although there are no drop down menus apart from the screen like mentioned previously.
What is your overall impression ? I think it is proffesional although it could be improved.
Summarise the webpage to appeal to potential employers.
I think that the page is basic but shows some creativity and proffesionalism.
Website name - http://www.nataliebehring.com/gallery-list
What are your first impressions ? What attracted you to this particular website? I think that this portfolio looks very different from the others it looks less mainstream and more like a personal blog to her follows very in the style of the images she takes so it compliments them well. I think this edge brings a different perspective to portfolios.
What is the main colour scheme? Grey and white just like the others this exadurates the color and life within the photos themselves.
How many navigation tabs/buttons are there ? There is 5 main button among the navigation bar at the top each are similair to all found on every portfolio I have looked at.
How many subfolders or drop down menus are there ? There are menus within menus when it comes to the display of the photography and the sets in which they come from.
What is your overall impression ? I think the blog does not look as proffesional as the other but holds some edge.
Summarise the webpage to appeal to potential employers.
An edgy yet creative portfolio with a great display of original work and design.
Task 2. Design
My main page will look very similair to this :
Task 3. The home page
The colours that I will be using are black and white cause they frame the pictures I may also use a splash of colour to pop certain features out the image. My navigation will be with the use of one simplae side bar leading to different pages with the needed information.
Task 4. Choosing your Web host and template
On the internet there are a number of free web host companies with ready made templates. Find and review Three free website hosts and discuss the merits of each before you select one to use as a host for an online portfolio.
1) Wesbsite builder - http://www.weebly.com/
Weebly is a very popular web host that is free and simple to use there is a slection of features and templates to use although some are limited and there are some purchases and features that can only be used with an membership or paid for site. I found the main features I wanted sometimes were not their to be used. The design side was simple with easy to drop in features that made it simple to use and easily understandable.
2) Website builder - https://www.sitebuilder.com/
A little more complex then weebly as choices were harder to make but still the free service was more widely accessable to any member then weebly. The design process took some time to get used to but was easy to work. The designs and templates do look more proffesional and can be tailored easily.
3) Website builder- Wix
This website builder is simple although there is the problem with cost as only the simple template is used and then the page is free. The design base is easy to use to modify it but not enough to some peoples liking. They are also a recognisable brand that had been used widely and is known more to employers .
A Curriculum Vitae often shortened to CV is a professional self marketing that has been used for decades. The piece of work is a basic outline of everything that a person has to offer in the professional world. It shows all potential employers what you have to offer to their company most often for the specific field that they are offering. This means that a CV will change for person to person and for each company that you may be applying for. It must outline the skills, ability and experience within this chosen field.
A CV must create a statement that is heard by all companies this has created sections of self promotion that we have never had before such as creative graphic inspired CV's , online CVs and even has created online CV social networks such as Linked IN. These all follow the codes and conventions of the CV but have gave it a twist that can be seen by employers specifically in the creative sector.
There are many codes and conventions of a CV most importantly being its size as often a CV should be 2 pages and under for the reason that employers will have to see many CVs and it has to be in a readable size. This also changes the hierarchy of information within the document as firstly you want the most important information to be seen first this means this has to be added at the beginning this again increases the likeliness that they are to be seen by the employer. The layout of the CV must be clear with the text in a regular size 12 font with a world wide established font such as Times New Roman. The language must be standard english easy for anyone to understand at all levels.
Once a CV has been created it can be sent to the employer this maybe within an application system or by simply delivering it straight to the company. You need this to reach the employer so it needs to be eye catching and professional.
I think that this CV uses the means of photography to
promote themselves instead of other images that I have seen on similar CVs
aimed at the same caeer. This CV captures the item needed most a camera telling
the employer where thee piroties are and the specifics of the career that he
wants. The CV is smartly set out and keeps to the black and white theme that
reflects professionalism.
This stunning image shows the skills that the photographer
has without even saying a word about him this is what is important when hiring
someone from the creative industry as they have to show the skills although it
will be in the portfolio they may not see that if they don’t like our CV first.
This CV has the correct balance of photography skills and the basic that is needed
in a cv.
This Cv again has the balance in of photography and basic
knowledge but in this case they have creatively inwined the both together with
a comic like affect. The image is powerful but does not overpower what is seen
through the information. It does put there skills to the test and displays that
they can use them effectively.
This CV is bold and really captures your attention it is in
a cinematic stle that is very simlair to that of old styles movie posters. He
has kept this styke throught by not only using the correct language seen in the
title but it also shows thebasic skills
of photography. It is bold and attracts the readers eye.
This cv unlike the many other has used typography instead of
photo graphy. Instead of showing his photography skills he has chosen to
display his creativity to create a camera out of the needed information that is
placed upon a CV. This attracts the readers eye.
This camera related cv is very simalair to the first CV its
shows basic photography skills and ties in the equipment for the job. The cv
like most of this style sticks to the basic black and white scheme that is
popular with photography.
This imaginative design has 3D effect that pulls you into
the situation and attracts you into the creative elements of the document. It
clearly shows the field of work over the text. This does over shadow the
information and can appear like a gimic.

A career as a press photographer would suit you if you have an interest in current affairs, a flair for the creative and the necessary technical ability...
Press photographers take photographs to record news, current events and lifestyle stories. Their aim is to capture the best images which document an event, tell a story or convey a message and support the printed word. The pictures are then reproduced in newspapers, magazines and increasingly, online. It's also known as editorial photography.
The role can develop into photojournalism. You'll need to demonstrate flair for investigating and telling a story, using both images and words to convey the message. Photojournalists often work for magazines rather than newspapers, and can work on a project over a long period of time.
Types of press photography
Working as a press photographer, you could specialise in any number of areas, including:
sport;
war;
lifestyle;
design;
current events;
entertainment.
Responsibilities
Press photography requires a combination of intuition, creativity and technical skills, and you'll need to:
work closely with other people concerned with the story, such as journalists and picture editors, and agree the photographic requirements for a story;
handle admin arrangements such as timing, press cards, transport and access to restricted areas, venues and events;
photograph events or personalities, and note details for photographic captions;
add relevant keywords to image files for picture libraries so the images can be recognised in search engines;
ensure all pictures are appropriate, processed, catalogued and ready in time to meet deadlines;
prepare and send digital photographs for newspaper publication to deadline;
maintain up-to-date knowledge about current news stories and any specialist areas;
source freelance photographers for a job or existing photographs if pushed to meet a deadline;
arrange lighting and other requirements for magazine studio shoots;
check the weather forecast and light values of places beforehand;
maintain photographic and electronic communications equipment.
Working as a freelance press photographer, extra activities include:
researching and anticipating relevant events;
negotiating the sale of specific shots;
handling all business activities and establishing and maintaining contacts.
Working hours
You need to be where the story is, so expect to work unsocial hours including evenings and weekends. For example, if sport's your specialism, you'll be required to attend evening and weekend fixtures. Time off in lieu is generally given.
What to expect
Professional press photographers hold press cards which are usually recognised by the police. They're supplied to member organisations including the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), the British Press Photographers' Association (BPPA) and British Association of Journalists (BAJ).
Most newspapers have a small core of staff photographers including senior photographers and a picture editor. Agencies and many newspapers use regular contract freelancers, on a good daily rate of pay and with guaranteed work. However, the bulk of press images come from freelancers with regional or specialist knowledge or from agencies.
In local papers, the news might seem less dramatic than in the national press, but will be of equal importance to those involved and to local readers. You'll cover everything from golden wedding celebrations to graffiti on the town hall.
National newspapers only recruit experienced photographers with a substantial track record. At this level, it'll be assumed that you can use a camera proficiently, but you'll also need to show that you can handle people, meet deadlines and be in the right place at the right time to get the pictures.
Magazines sometimes employ photographers with particular specialist areas, such as food or gardens. The emphasis here is more likely to be on creative skills and producing a suitable layout. Some magazines only employ freelance photographers.
While the male to female ratio amongst press photographers is balancing out, some areas, such as war and sports photography, remain particularly male-dominated.
Work is quite widely available in most cities and large towns where newspapers are produced. Detailed geographical knowledge is very useful to local photographers for finding the best viewpoint.
Work can be stressful if you're recording an accident or people's emotions and may also involve ethical decisions related to intrusion into private lives, and the possible consequences of the publication of photographs. You may experience objections to your photography and be required to deal with conflict.
Jobs may occur anywhere and at any time, so you have to be constantly available.
Physical mobility and lifting ability are required.
A driving licence is essential, as travel within a working day is frequent. Overnight absence from home may be required, as may overseas work or travel.
